If the rumors are right then Apple has revealed a huge leap in the phone models. According to bgr the New iOS 12 beta show line of code talking about SIM tray 1 and 2 and the iPhone dual SIM capability.
This is been long overdue. I don’t know about folks in developed countries like Europe or America and their affinity to Apple products how they feel about a dual sim enabled device. Down here in Zambia a dual SIM is must and it’s the first thing phone buyers ask whether they are buying a Galaxy Note 8 or Samsung Galaxy S8.
Early days of SIM duality was nudging with switching of the phone and making a choice for desired sim. Because only one sim would work. Then we had to restart the phone to make one sim primary. The primary sim would operate at the highest mobile network either 3 or 4G.
Then the second sim would be pushed to work on 2G network. Samsung has perfected the the sim duality you can have a 3G in one and 4G on the other.
Apple as always known feels they know what users want but mostly they are wrong. Perhaps that is why the phone is unpopular in this region apart from giving you a false sense of differentiation.
So what is Apple up to now with iPhone Dual SIM
On Monday Apple released beta version 5 of iOS 12 showing off a number of new features. New features largely address improvements. But a few guys deep at the code saw references to dual sim inside the iOS code

In the image the code contains references to a “second SIM status” and a “second SIM tray status”.
A “dual SIM device” is also mentioned as the lines below showed from image 9to5mac.com
/* @class WRM_HandoverManager */ _(bool) isDualSimDevice { r31 = r31 - 0x30;
Apple will be holding their annual Apple Event next month in September. The company is rumored to be launching three new iPhones by the end of the year.
It is easy to say one of the iPhones will be a dual sim. Discussion is that the iPhone for default sim will handle eSIM then the second tray for countries that do not support eSIM. Still this could be the next big thing by Apple and a quite good reason to throw the Droid away for some people.
